Your Mission

As a Contact Lens Technician, you will be responsible for ordering, fitting, and dispensing contacts, maintaining contact lens trials or contact lens inventory, ordering and dispensing eyeglasses, and following prescriptions written by ophthalmologists or optometrists.

What You’ll Do

• Review written prescriptions to determine the specifications for contact lenses.
• Recommend appropriate contact lenses after considering the prescription and the patient’s lifestyle needs.
• Measure patients’ eyes, pupil diameter, corneal curvature, segment height for multifocal lenses, and the vertex distance.
• Prepare work orders, including prescriptions for contact lenses and information on their size, material, color, and style that give ophthalmic laboratory technician the information needed to grind and/or order lenses material.
• Verify information in the fitting of contacts by using a lensometer, slit lamp, keratometer and or radius scope to order’s specification(s). May obtain patient’s previous record to re-make contacts or verify prescription with the examining optometrist or ophthalmologist.
• Instruct patients about adapting to, wearing, and caring for contact lenses.
• Document patient care and treatment. Follow safety, infection control, and quality assurance protocols.

• Knowledge of contact lens equipment and instruments.
• Knowledge of safety, infection control, documentation, and quality improvement protocols.
• Knowledge of new products through and the ability to explain or demonstrate the benefits.
• Skill in using computers for contact lens mathematics and contact lens physics.
• Skill in using precision measuring instruments and other contact lens machinery and tools.
• Skill in adjusting contact lenses to best fit patients.
• High School diploma or GED, associate degree preferred
• Minimum three years of clinical experience, preferably in optical laboratory or department. AVP is willing to train and/or supply training material.
• Ability to perform essential functions of the position with or without accommodation, including the ability to use power hand tools and lift a minimum of 70 lbs.
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• Willingness to submit to a background check (drug screen for Ambulatory Surgery Centers only)

Physical Requirements:

· Exerting up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

· Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

· Must have close visual acuity to perform an activity including viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, interpretation, etc.

· Must be able to be stationary for prolonged periods of time.

· Performs task in a demanding environment requiring multi-task and prioritize work.

Compliance training and testing is required annually and as needed.
